Meeting Minutes,  November 7 , 2013

 

 

Ceremonial opening conducted by Commander Havekost.

 

Commander Havekost called the meeting to order at 7:21pm.

 

Commander Havekost recognized Past Commanders Mark Dorsey and Don Mills, ALA President Judy Mills, and VFW Commander Jim Durnal in attendance. Tom Gora, 5th District Commander, was also recognized

 

Roll call of fifteen members present.

 

The Minutes of the October 3, 2013 General Meeting were read. Motion to approve Minutes, seconded and passed.

 

Applications/transfers: Robert Beach (transfer), Army, Charles Scribner, Army, Gary Finger, Navy, and James Moyes, Army. Paperwork for all new applicants is in order. Motion to accept applicants, pending payment from one, seconded and passed.

 

Auxiliary President’s report read and attached.

 

District Commander Gora congratulated the Post on being Post of the Year. He also thanked Commander Havekost for being the District’s webmaster. He reminded everyone that the Department Commander would be visiting the Post in December. He also recognized Kathy Church’s hard work with the MIAP.

 

First Vice reported that the Past Commanders are planning a dinner for December or January. The menu has not been determined.

 

Website report was read and attached.

 

Second Vice reminded everyone that Cowboy Night is December 7th. He asked that everyone publicize the event. Karaoke will be the entertainment.

 

Third Vice thanked the District Commander for joining the meeting.

 

Finance Officer Leppeard reported the Post’s Balances. Motion to accept report for audit, seconded and passed.

 

The Adjutant reported that the Post’s membership renewal is 63.566%. She reminded members to sign the membership applications if they recruit a new member so that they will get credit for the Membership Incentive Program. Members are also asked to collect DD-214’s when they recruit new members so that their eligibility can be verified and a copy is kept on file.

 

The public portion of the meeting was closed at 7:48pm.

 

Unfinished Business

 

The Commander stated that he was waiting to find out how much the material would be to build a display case for the John Wayne handgun the Post won.

 

The Commander informed the Committee that he is waiting to get dates from Cathy Costley from the Attorney General’s Office so she can conduct a class on recent scams.

 

New Business

 

Second Vice stated that the Post needs to consider recognizing Kathy Church for her excellent work with the MIAP. The Commander reported that the Post had made a donation to MIAP and that she had received an award. District Commander Gora stated that the District would most likely be recognizing her as well.

 

The Commander stated that he would like to see the Post send four boys to Boy’s State instead of the three we normally send. A motion to increase the number of boys sent to Boy’s State to four was made, seconded, and passed.

 

The Commander reported that the American Flag in the Post is yellow and dingy from all the cigarette smoke. Mr. Durnal stated that he would get pricing to replace it. A motion to reimburse Mr. Durnal no more than $100 for the purchase of an American Flag was made, seconded, and passed.

 

The Commander reported that the ALA would be purchasing 10 wreaths for Wreaths Across America. He stated that he would like the Legion to share half the cost of the $150. Motion to pay $75 for Wreaths Across America was made, seconded, and passed.

 

The Commander reported that Post 37 is having a golf tournament and that the flyer is hanging in the Post.

 

The Commander reported that he had been contacted by the Jaguars with an offer of $30/ticket for the Arizona Cardinals game on November 17th for Military Appreciation.

 

The Commander stated that the Post is looking for donations and help in the kitchen for the Thanksgiving dinner.

 

The Commander reported that the ALA would be serving Christmas dinner and asked that a donation be made to purchase the food. Motion to give the ALA $100 to purchase food for Christmas dinner was made, seconded, and passed.

 

Mr. Durnal reported that the Fleet Reserve would be coordinating Pearl Harbor ceremonies at Naval Station Mayport. He added that six people from the Post would need to attend.

 

District Commander Gora reported that Emblem Sales has given the copyright to another shirt company. He stated that he would share the information about the new company with Commander Havekost at the District meeting.

 

The Commander reminded members that the Department Commander would be here on December 5th. Dinner will be at 5:30pm followed by the General Meeting.

 

Nothing further for the good of the Legion.
